On the Go

An app directed towards providing a platform that helps in searching the Sports and fitness activities, with features such as booking a venue, finding a friend, creating a group, and exploring events.

OVERVIEW

Through this design sprint, I understood how to identify the problem, understand the users, identify their needs and come up with rational and justified solutions to be tested and iterated through different methods.

The goal of this exercise is to get experience creating a solution by gathering quick feedback to validate and invalidate the hypothesis, iterating upon the feedback and testing again

DURATION - 6 weeks

DISCIPLINE

  • User Research, interviews and Analysis

  • UX Design

  • UI Design + Iterations

TEAM - Individual

PROBLEM  STATEMENT (INTIAL  ASSUMPTION)

Individuals struggle to accomplish their physical health goals.

As an individual in India, I have noticed a lack of awareness regarding physical health, and we persevered towards our carrier goals or daily routine. Yet, we have struggled to accomplish our health goals.

UNDERSTANDING THE PROBLEM

WHITE PAPER RESEARCH

Starting with white paper research, I began to draw from research articles on Physical health, exercise and physical activity - when I stumbled on eye-opening statics from the International Journal of Behavioral Nutrition and Physical Activity.

Screenshot 2022-12-15 173945.jpg

More than 90% of individuals in both urban and rural areas reported doing no physical activity.

Almost two-thirds (64%) of Indians say that they don’t exercise. Interestingly, while nearly half (46%) of consumers say that leading a healthy lifestyle is their top priority, only 37% of them actually exercise.

RESEARCH INSIGHTS

  1. More than a quarter of the world’s adult population (1.4 billion adults) are insufficiently active

  2. Worldwide, around 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men do not do enough physical activity to stay healthy.

  3. Levels of inactivity are twice as high in high-income countries compared to low-income countries.

USER INTERVIEWS

After drawing insights from white paper research, I have conducted interviews with eight people of different age groups and gender to have a better sense of the problem and identify the critical pain points of the problem.

Research Questions

  • Can you describe your current schedule and how you maintain your physical fitness?

  • How often do you go to play something or any physical fitness-related activity?

  • What challenges do you face in finding a place to perform such activities and finding people with whom you can achieve? How does this make you feel?

  • Is there any way in which you feel these challenges can be resolved?

Affinitizing the data points

'I don't get free court when I get time to play. That's quite irritating'

If I was to come on my own I don't think I would be able to continue'.

'You get home and tidy up after eight, it leaves not a lot of time left'

'I couldn't find any proper court and opposite player nearby with whom I could enjoy playing badminton, which resulted in me missing my favorite game almost every day.'

"I try to eat healthy food to stay fit, but it is very difficult to find proper information on nutrition, healthy eating, and habits."

'I would go to a gym or fitness classes, if I knew if I could get someone to have the children. I would do it, I would'

'I really do enjoy exercise and activity but the only other reason I don't do it is moneywise'.

'It become very difficult for me to find a place to play basketball with proper court'.

PAIN POINTS

People were not able to find facilities when they needed them.

Accessibility of facilities and lack of time

An efficient way of finding venues and book

schedules ahead of time.

PAIN POINTS

OPPURTUNITIES

CONTEXT

Individuals were not able to continue for longer without any company

Fear of walking alone

Easier ways to find groups and people.

No motivation except then self-motivation.

Perceived lack of competence

Reward points and some criteria of achieving goals

Uncertain of healthy choices for meals and activities due to lack of knowledge on nutrition and healthy habits.

Lack of awareness about nutrition and physical health

Easier ways to learn and  contribute to nutrition and  physical health.

Face difficulty in finding events happening in the city related to health.

So many times, I needed to find out where the events were happening in the city.

An efficient way to find events.

RE-DEFINING PROBLEM STATEMENT

How might we provide a platform where people can easily access facilities, meet people and stay aware of the events while educating themselves about physical health?

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Existing products tried to solve some pain points, but none had done it all.

Products have tried to capitalize on the sports complexes' growth rate by booking venue options and making them a paid feature.

Through research, competitors can be categorized into two categories - Products that solely focus on booking and vending venues, such as Sportido and products that introduce features like find groups and learning experiences, like Playo and Fitso.

MY FIRST CASE STUDY - Frame 22.jpg

EFFICIENT FLOWS + VISUALIZATIONS

Then utilizing the different opportunities, I started to look at different UI to design the best solutions possible.

PROTOTYPING AND GETTING FEEDBACKS

I conducted user testing using digital lo-fi wireframes, and some insights that came after these user testing are -

There is too much going on in the bottom navigation bar,

I didn't use much of it

Reduce the Navigation Bar

Design iterations: Reduce the number of functions in the bottom navigation bar.

The horizontal sliding options are not discoverable on the find venue page.

Indicate the Navigation Buttons

Design iterations: Clearly show the arrow icon for easily discoverable and smooth navigation.

Finding some personalized features or a section from which we can easily navigate past searches is challenging.

Adding Recommended Section

Design iterations: A section for recommendations can be added on the home screen for easy access.

SOLUTION

Onboarding Screen

Explaining what the app does on multiple screens, highlighting one use case at a time.

Find a Venue Screen

The users can find a venue according to their interests. Upon selecting one, the user can book a venue at their convenience and get an option to subscribe for rewards and cost benefits. (Filters parent-friendly)

Events Screen

This screen helps keep the user updated with upcoming event dates and locations related to physical health. The user can find, book and share the events with their friends.

Learn Screen

To help users stay more informed about the physical fitness and health, a learn feature is introduced where they can find videos, audio and blogs.

REFLECTIONS

I learned how to conduct the white paper research and the interviews and further analyze them to create problem statements and formulate solutions to those problems.

Designing for a diverse user group -  research and evaluating the product

Designing for millions of users means inheriting biases and using data to make decisions

Iterate as much as you can - The prototyping and testing phase helped me to test the product and, most importantly, iterate and improve it.

What I would do differently. I would focus on a single feature instead of taking multiple at once- this will help me design usable and interactive user flow from end to end.
